Presentation of Med EMPORION in Barcelona

The Deputy Mayor of Barcelona, Jordi W. Carnes, together with the manager of the Barcelona Municipal Institute of Markets (IMMB), Jordi Torrades, presented on 4 August 2009 the MedEmporion Project,

The project, foresees transnational cooperation among cities that have relevant markets in the Mediterranean area, and in the coming years will create networks and work relationships between retailers, cities and institutions, as well as the transfer of good management practices and trade promotion.

In the frame of MedEMporion a total of four Food Market Festivals, will be organised, one in each participating city, which will spread among the general public the reality of the markets of the Mediterranean, its values and its typical products. The Marseille's Food Market Festival is scheduled on September 2009, in Torino for the month of June 2010 and Barcelona in the autumn of 2010.

Also two studies will be conducted within the framework of the project: a study of the markets of the Mediterranean (north-south east-west) to capture their strengths and weaknesses, threats and opportunities, and a study on the presence of product in the local municipal markets.

The project also foresees the implementation of pilot projects around the creation of farmers markets (Marseille), creating a wine museum in a market (Genoa), markets as educational agents (Barcelona) and the Porta Palazzo Market as a tool to promote the recovery of their neighborhood and tourist magnet (Turin).
